Every Christmas, we dress it up, decorate it, and put little baubles on it. It’s the humble sponge cake we’re talking about, which gets a makeover into the yule log during the festive season. In time for the holidays, here is where to find the best log cakes in Singapore this Christmas 2024.

A log cake is just a Swiss roll in a Christmas sweater. Making either one of them starts with spreading buttercream over sponge cake and twisting it into a roulade. However, the log cake sets itself apart with a textured icing coat that resembles tree bark. The ends are also left bare to symbolise a cut branch. To really give the impression of winter, it can be dusted with powdered sugar to mimic snow.

Some of the more classic log cakes in Singapore in 2024 include Pan Pacific’s rendition flavoured with Guanaja chocolate and the Grandma chocolate log cake from Shangri-La. Similarly, St. Regis has rolled out the traditional log cake with caramel smoothie, bitter chocolate mousse, hazelnut praline sponge, and crunch chocolate nibs. For a halal version, turn to Swissbake for its chocolate caramel yule log cake.

Other restaurants are updating the yule log. Monti combines it with a tiramisu. Koma adds in peanut butter. Kaarla marries it with the quintessential Australian dessert, lamington. Grand Hyatt makes it tropical with coconut and lime. For a local twist, there’s Chin Mee Chin Confectionery and its kaya- and gula melaka-flavoured log cakes. And is it a fruit basket, or is it a log cake from Cedric Grolet? Discover them below.
