Meteor showers occur when Earth passes through the debris field left behind by a comet or asteroid. In the case of the Eta Aquarids, the iconic Halley’s Comet is the parent celestial body. As Earth encounters this debris field, small particles burn up in our atmosphere, creating the dazzling light show we know as a meteor shower.

The Eta Aquarids will be active between April 16 and May 27 this year. While some reports predict a peak on May 6-7, 2024, the American Meteor Society suggests the peak may occur on May 5. Their website states, “The best rates occur from May 1-10 with an added bonus as rates are expected to be enhanced by debris perturbed by Jupiter in a direction closer to the Earth.”

While the Eta Aquarids are best viewed from the Southern Hemisphere, some parts of the Northern Hemisphere can also enjoy this upcoming celestial event in May.

Earthshine

Earthshine, also known as the “ashen glow” or “Da Vinci glow” (after renowned artist Leonardo da Vinci who first explained it), is a breathtaking phenomenon that occurs just before sunrise. During this time, sunlight reflects off the Earth’s illuminated surface and onto the moon’s dark side, creating a soft, ethereal glow. This illumination makes the moon’s unlit crescent appear brighter.

Earthshine will be visible from May 3 to May 6 this year, best observed just before sunrise. You can also witness Earthshine in the night sky on May 11-12.

Mercury at its greatest western elongation

Skywatchers, mark your astronomy calendar to witness a fascinating celestial event this May: Mercury’s greatest western elongation. This occurs when Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun, reaches its maximum angular distance away from the Sun as seen from Earth. This phenomenon happens twice every 116 days (approximately four months).

On May 9, look for Mercury in the eastern sky just before sunrise. It will be visible at a lower angle, making it easier to spot. However, be cautious, as observing Mercury while any part of the Sun is above the horizon can damage your eyes.
