What is the Black Friday sale?
Black Friday always falls in November on the Friday following Thanksgiving (the fourth Thursday). The term originated in the 1950s in Philadelphia, when the city was flooded with tourists because of the Army-Navy football game over the weekend after Thanksgiving. Tired and worn out, the police officers worked overtime to maintain law and order in the city and hence started calling the day Black Friday.
Additionally, retailers witnessed a surge in their sales on this day because of all these people shopping. They began calling the day by this name, relating to the term “in the black”, which in old bookkeeping practice meant profit. This continued in the following years and spread nationwide in the 1980s, referencing the red-to-black (loss-to-profit) narrative. It is now considered the first day of holiday season shopping.
Popular all over, the Black Friday sale has transformed into a global shopping event with brands offering irresistible deals (both online and offline) and consumers shopping to their heart’s content while ensuring maximum savings.
