As the Himalayan Queen chugged up the winding mountain tracks, Shimla gradually revealed its charm with hints of green tin roofs peeking through the foliage. Our journey began in New Delhi, where we boarded the Shatabdi Express to Kalka. From there, we transferred to the iconic Toy Train, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This historic Kalka-Shimla Railway has been ferrying passengers through a breathtaking 96 km stretch, crossing over 107 tunnels and 850 bridges for nearly two centuries. As we traversed through picturesque landscapes, passing quaint villages, dense pine forests, and canopies of blooming rhododendron trees, we were transported back in time. Once serving as India’s summer capital, Shimla has consistently attracted many visitors. We had set out as tourists to find some beautiful places to visit in Shimla.
Having grown up in Darjeeling, a beautiful hill station in West Bengal, I had always been intrigued by Shimla’s rich history and natural beauty. While the two share similarities in their colonial architecture and mountainous terrain, Shimla has a unique character that sets it apart. As we explored the various tourist places in Shimla over the next three days, I noticed elements of the city that seemed familiar and evoked memories of home. However, the city simultaneously presented its rich repository of geographical and cultural landmarks. From exploring the iconic Mall Road to visiting historic landmarks like the Viceregal Lodge, we discovered a blend of the old and the new.
