OYSTERS ARE ALREADY one of the most sustainable and delicious seafoods out there, and very groovy Kowloon-based hotel Eaton HK (rooms from HK$1,080) has made them even more earth friendly. Eaton HK has partnered with a Hong Kong cement manufacturer in one of the most unexpected collabs of the past year, putting discarded oyster shells to sustainable use.
Working with Green Island Cement, they’ve launched an oyster-shell upcycling programme that has already converted eight tonnes of shells from the restaurants of Eaton HK and The Langham, Hong Kong, into cement—as in, the building material. The oyster shells are used an alternative to limestone, which constitutes up to 80 percent of cement and is typically imported from overseas, while seafloor dredging for limestone in Hong Kong’s harbor has more directly harmed the local environment.
In addition to providing construction materials, the collab will also see tableware and lifestyle products crafted by Green Island Cement used in Eaton HK’s dining outlets and guest rooms. Now you have an extra reason to shuck away.
